meet ms. amanda

E. Amanda Dellinger-Allen, Ed.S., M.S., LPC, NCC, CPCS, RPT-S, CTS, CAMS is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with the State of Georgia and National Certified Counselor (NCC) who's goal centers around empowering our future. She earned a Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, as well as an Education Specialist degree in Professional Counseling from GSU where she specialized in child/adolescent populations. As part of her educational and post-graduate experience, Amanda has been working directly with clients since August of 2006. Through these valuable experiences Amanda found that she relates easily and openly with all ages and types of people though she has taken a special interest in child and adolescent populations (ages 3-18). Throughout her educational and professional careers, Amanda has worked with children and adolescents providing individual, group, and family therapy services.  Amanda has worked in a number of therapeutic settings such as psychiatric hospitals, schools, Peachford Behavioral Health System, Murphy-Harpst Children's Center (a residential treatment center for adolescents), therapeutic group homes, The GreenHouse Children's Advocacy Center (a free outpatient center for child victims of sexual abuse), Sexual Assault Center of Northwest GA (community outreach presenter), outpatient settings, Kate's Club (a free support group for grieving children), and currently in private practice. Amanda loves what she does, and has made a huge difference in well over a hundred families in the North Georgia area. In January 2012 she founded Thrive Counseling Center in Kennesaw, GA which is a private practice specializing in children only!

Each of Ms. Dellinger-Allen's clients receives individualized care uniquely tailored to their culture, life situation, and treatment goals. Amanda has extensive training in expressive arts therapy and play therapy modalities. At Thrive, she combines making art, therapeutic games/activities, and play with psychotherapy to help children and adolescents facilitate expression, increase self-esteem, develop anger management strategies, improve relationships, ease anxiety, lift depression, deal with major life transitions, work through grief and loss, and expand communication. Amanda's therapy sessions are designed to engender a sense of hope by providing a safe, nonjudgmental space to work through difficult feelings and by encouraging the development of coping skills for managing major life transitions and everyday stressors. Amanda also sees clients who do not have a diagnosis but would benefit from gaining coping skills for dealing with life's challenges. Amanda works with the firm belief that with therapeutic awareness, empowerment, and motivation, each individual has the potential to not only heal and reach their goals, but to truly thrive.

In working with her younger clients, Amanda is considered both a Child-Centered and Adlerian Play Therapist, meaning that she allows the child to take the lead in their sessions and also infuses encouraging directive techniques to gently facilitate movement when a client is stuck. As opposed to traditional “talk therapy,” Play Therapy allows children to use play as their language and toys as their words. Because children do not have the language skills that adults do, it is necessary for them to be able to use play to communicate. Amanda also uses Sandtray Therapy, which a dynamic and expressive form of psychotherapy that allows clients to express their inner worlds through symbolism and metaphor in a sandtray. Play based therapy, sand tray, and other expressive arts can be wonderful tools for children to tell their story, and find creative solutions, as well as heal and find healthy ways to move forward. To help support her child clients at home, Amanda offers filial therapy where she works with parents who are good candidates, teaching parenting skills and provides consultations alongside Play Therapy. For parents of tweens/teens, Amanda also works collaboratively with parents by teaching parenting skills, implementing behavioral plans when appropriate, and following up by putting into place other supportive elements into the child’s daily life to continue in fostering positive change.

In Amanda's practice, children are given the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings and learn how to do so more successfully in their natural environments, as well. Utilizing child-centered and child-specific techniques such as play, arts & crafts, bibliotherapy (the use of books in therapy), therapeutic games, writing, relaxation, mindfulness, and skill building, each child will find a warm and open place to work through their stressors and struggles. Children will gain the necessary coping skills to keep in their "tool box" for life and will benefit from positive growth and increased self-esteem. Amanda desired that the tools gained during counseling are skills that will remain helpful to children/teens both during the rest of their childhood, and in their future adult life. Amanda operates from core belief that successful therapy is providing children/teens a safe and nonjudgmental space to process, heal, and find solutions; as well as helping families cultivate new tools and ways of interacting that can be transitioned from inside the Thrive Counseling office, to daily life, long after counseling has ended. Amanda offers a comprehensive list of support services for her clients reach this goal including: individual therapy for children and adolescents; play therapy; family therapy; sibling therapy; parent training or support; and group therapy services. At Thrive, she assesses each client and helps them work through their struggles effectively at their own pace, while using their own strengths. Amanda is committed to helping your child or teen function more effectively and confidently while learning how to cope with the constant struggles of growing up.

Amanda founded Thrive Counseling in January of 2012 out of a desire to provide a Center that was dedicated exclusively to comprehensive services developmentally tailored to younger clients’ mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing all in one comfortable, and inviting space that uses creativity (and lots of glitter!) to process feelings, heal from past events, and find solutions to tough stuff. In addition to seeing clients at Thrive Counseling, Amanda also serves as the Clinical Director for Thrive. In this role, she oversees the effective coordination of supportive and therapeutic services, upholds the highest standards for client care, and provides direction for interns and associate licensed professionals. Amanda Dellinger-Allen also provides both clinical supervision and case consultation for other professionals. As an Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S), Amanda offers individual and group clinical supervision for aspiring therapists seeking their LPC or RPT. Amanda is one of less than 50 RPT-S counselors in the entire state of Georgia, making her an even greater asset to the North GA area. Amanda is a Certified Professional Counseling Supervisor (CPCS), licensed through LPCA of Georgia.
