Melanie Kissell, M.S., LAPC, NCC is a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor (LAPC) in the state of Georgia and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She is originally from Texas and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 2009, and her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University in 2018. While at Georgia State University, Melanie received specialized training in Play Therapy and is presently on track to becoming a Registered Play Therapist. Melanie believes that every individual has the capacity for extraordinary growth and resilience when given the proper environment and conditions of love, hope, and support.

Before joining the team at Thrive, she specialized in working with little ones and their caregivers in enhancing their relationships and overcoming trauma. Melanie’s theoretical grounding is rooted in Child and Person-Centered Play Therapy. She works with clients across the age spectrum, with specialized training in Child-Parent Psychotherapy which treats children from 0-6 years of age. She has received advance training in utilizing play therapy with individuals and groups of all ages. As an advocate for therapeutic group work and the power of social support, she has a plethora of experience working with individuals in a group setting, including teaching teen and adult Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills classes in various settings, as well as leading groups for individuals experiencing disordered eating.

Prior to her work at Thrive, Melanie was a member of another Play Therapy centered practice in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Here Melanie received training in Trauma Informed Play Therapy practices and completed her Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Certification. While at this practice, she worked with individuals who had experienced trauma, separation, and abandonment issues. Melanie was a DBT Skills Facilitator for two years at a DBT centered private therapy practice in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia. She is enthusiastic about utilizing DBT skills and practices with both teen and adult clients seeking to make major life changes and grow exponentially.

Melanie completed two clinical internships, working with women experiencing disordered eating at The Renfrew Center of Atlanta and later working with victims of interpersonal violence and sexual assault at liveSAFE Resources, a non-profit organization in Marietta, Georgia.

She believes that sometimes life presents us with challenges, adjustments, and opportunities for growth, all we need is for someone to hear what we are saying in a new way. Together she will work with you to ensure that you are truly listened to in a way that elicits effective change, growth, and healing.
