meet the therapist

Stephanie Smith, M.S, NCC. is a Masters Level therapist and National Certified Counselor (NCC) presently working toward credentialing as an Associate Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia. Additionally, Stephanie is also going for certification as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Stephanie completed her Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of North Georgia in May 2020. In her time as a counseling graduate student, she partook in specialized training in areas such as motivational interviewing, child-centered play therapy, Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children, as well as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). She also was a counseling intern at both Mount Sinai Wellness Center located in Dahlonega, Georgia and Children’s Center for Hope and Healing in Gainesville, Georgia. Her counseling experiences thus include working with clients ages 18+ who struggle with addiction and dual diagnoses, along with those of all ages who have endured child sexual abuse either directly or indirectly, and adolescents with sexual behavior problems.

Stephanie uses inventive, yet effective therapeutic techniques while encouraging her clients to engage in healthy coping strategies, emotional regulation, self-love, and even mindfulness to help them feel more in charge of their current situation. She practices primarily from a CBT perspective, but also draws from person-centered, strength-based, and feminist theories as appropriate for the individual, family, or group. The ultimate goal is for clients to be able to transform their cognitive distortions into more positive thinking, experience themselves as the “expert” of their own lives in a safe space filled with counselor empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence, and build upon their strengths and sense of empowerment, in the world at large. And, of course, her hope is for them to genuinely enjoy coming to counseling and find healing via the tools that they gain while on their therapeutic journey!

Stephanie takes great pride in advocating for her clients whenever needed, particularly the ones who belong to marginalized populations, such as the LGBTQIA+ community and communities of color. She is a professional member of the American Counseling Association, too. Stephanie’s experiences in counseling have created a highly dedicated and passionate therapist out of her, especially when it comes to trauma cases. She truly believes that counseling, when paired with one’s unique resilience and a helpful support network, has the power to change the lives of self and others for the better. Stephanie is thrilled to be a part of the Thrive family and cannot wait to start having a positive influence on yours!

Ms. Smith works under the Direction of Olivia Prewett-Scott and the Clinical Supervision of E. Amanda Dellinger-Allen, Ed.S., M.S., LPC, NCC, CPCS, RPT-S, CTS, CAMS while at Thrive.
